THREE LAKES, WI – It was a long time coming for the return of the Badger Racing Association to TNT Speedway and once there, the Thunderbikes did not disappoint.
16-year old Jake Cunningham of Sherwood, WI made a last corner pass for the win, earning a bonus prize in the process in the Thunderbike A-main.
It was part of an action-packed night of racing that saw Eagle River's Jason Zdroik claim yet another clean sweep in the WISSOTA AMSOIL Dirt Track Series Midwest Modifieds; Baraga, MI's Jeff Klopstein extend his point lead in the WADTS Street Stocks with a clean sweep; John Johnson of Lac du Flambeau hold of a husband-wife tandem in the TNT Bombers and Bruce Crossing, MI's Logan Lannet take a tight win in the TNT Stingers.
Cunningham, after outdueling fellow youngster Adam Bushman in the heat, chose to start a half straightaway behind the leaders for a $50 bonus if he were to win the race. It looked like a flawed strategy early on as he worked from eighth to third, but remained a half straight behind leaders Bushman and Steve Kasten.
Things took a turn with six laps to go as Kasten laid his bike down in turn one, bringing out the yellow. It moved Cunningham to second and right behind Bushman for the final dash.
Immediately the two took to battling side by side. Cunningham took the lead on lap 11, Bushman took it back on lap 13. Cunningham jockeyed his was back to the front coming to the white flag as the fun really began. Bushman slipped back to the inside in turn two and made the pass as Cunningham bobbled. Cunningham charged back down the backstretch and made one last desperation move to the inside. It paid off as his slipped by Bushman out of turn for and beat him back to the line by half a bike.
Kasten worked his way back from the spill to the third position. Craig Lewis and Woody Eckes rounded out the top five.
The cream once again rose to the top in the WATDS Midwest Mod feature as the top five were all class veterans by the end of the 20 laps. Zdroik passed class point leader Jerry Grasse for the lead with eight laps to go and went on for his sixth feature win in seven tries. Grasse took second, maintaining a three point lead over Bruce Belland, who finished third. Chad Boettcher and Jeff McDonald rounded out the top five.
For the second straight week, Klopstein ran away with the WADTS Street Stock Feature as he pushed his lead in the class to 23 points with five races left in the championship.
Klopstein took the lead on lap five as Brad Hartman spun while leading. From there it was a battle for second as Ron Van Dusen held off Nick Visser and Hartman for the position. Kevin Maulson, Jr. was fifth.
Leif Gunderson's chances at a track championship took a serious blow Saturday night in the Bombers. With a sizable lead and less than seven laps to go, the right rear wheel gave way coming through turns three and four, turning what could have been a fourth feature win of the season into a last place finish.
That gave the lead to John Johnson with Heidi and Steve Karshbaum, a wife and husband tandem from Chetek right behind him. Johnson got a solid restart with seven laps to go, quickly opening a three-car length lead, an advantage he would hold the rest of the way. Heidi Karshbaum took second as Steve held off Lee Bradley and 2009 track champ Denny Tushoski for third.
With Gunderson taking last and Dan Melton falling out of the race in eighth, both sit tied for second in the points, 16 behind Bradley.
Kasey Gross passed Logan Lannet on the last lap of the Stinger heat race. Lannet vowed it wouldn't happen again in the feature. The two duked it out over the last half of the race, but on the final lap as Gross finally got to Lannet's back bumper, Lannet protected the bottom and held on for the win.
It was still a good night for Gross, who cut Brandon Ross's point lead in the class to just two points. Ross, Bill Martin and Fred Feger rounded out the top five.
Racing continues at TNT Speedway next Saturday with a full racing program. And mark your calendars for Saturday, August 7 for “Midwest Mod Madness” at TNT. It will be a WISSOTA Midwest Mod Special with increased laps and an increased payout. Hot Laps at 7:00, racing at 7:45. For more, visit www.TNTSpeedway.com.
